The Atacama Desert is considered the driest in the world, but in 2017 it had unexpected amounts of rain. The usually arid view is filled with multicolored flowers. This phenomenon is known as the “flowering desert”, during which about 200 desert plants begin to germinate due to the rains that occur in March. The views of the Atacama Desert are usually so extreme that the region has been compared to the planet Mars and has often been used in “Red Planet” movies.
