Toni Ndikanwu was born on 9 August 1964 at Port Harcourt, in the south of Nigeria. In the year 1988, after graduating from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he was sent to Kano, the Northern part of Nigeria, where he joined the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC). This programme assigned Ndikanwu to lecture on the arts at The Kano State Polytechnic, and in 1989 he received a state award for outstanding performance. Ndikanwu was offered a teaching post to continue teaching at the Polytechnic, but he kindly refused owing to a religious crisis at the time. Since then he has collaborated with noted African artists, such as El-Anatsui and Obiora Udechukwu in Nigeria and abroad. Between 1997 and 2004 Ndikanwu lived and worked in Athens, and is currently active in the United Kingdom.
