In addition to dozens of Bulgarian and international awards for painting, Professor Toma Varbanov has the distinction of also winning the most prestigious national awards for painting. He is a long-time professor of frescoes and paintings at the National Academy of Arts, and has professionally prepared dozens of creative young artists who have proved to be successful in Bulgaria and abroad. For more than 40 years, Prof. Toma Varbanov has had his own authorial presence in a wide artistic territory.
Born and raised in Plovdiv, Toma Varbanov graduated from the Art School in Sofia and then at the Academy of Arts. After completion of the National Academy of Arts “Mural Painting” in 1969-70, Prof. Varbanov specialized in painting at the Academy “Grand Chummier” in Paris.

Prof. Varbanov’s exhibitions revive the autonomous value of paintings bearing divergent psychological and social suggestions, relevant and contemporary impact and professionalism.

On December 3 (Tuesday) 2013, from 18:00 at the Academiagallery on 1 Shipka Str.  shall be opened a unique art event – the famous Bulgarian artist Prof. Toma Varbanov presents paintings created over the past 20 but not displayed till today. The exhibition will be opened by Prof. Chavdar Popov, and the jazz performers Dimitar Liolev and Nicola Goryalov.The catalog of the exhibition was designed by Prof. Bozidar Yonov.The exhibition revives the autonomous value of paintings bearing divergent psychological and social suggestions, relevant and contemporary impact and professionalism.After completion of the National Academy of Art “Mural Painting” in 1969–1970, Prof. Toma Varbanov specializes painting at the Academy “Grand Chummier” – Paris, France with Prof. Yves Breyer – Chairman of the Autumn Salon in Paris. More than four decades, the author works in a wide creative territory – all genres of painting and wall art. Professor Toma Varbanov has won the most prestigious national awards for painting and dozens of other Bulgarian and international awards for painting.
